Meta data: The piece on the left was made without using the tool, while the one on the right was made with the tool. Although there was no significant improvement in speed (the completion time differed by only two minutes), the tool reduced the difficulty of operation and helped the overall form hold together more effectively.

The large block of orange at the bottom was inspired by a sudden memory of my grandfather’s old south-facing bedroom. I remembered the sunlight pouring in, filling the room with warmth, so I chose this expansive warm tone.
Then, in the middle, I added the softest thread to form a circle, hoping to extend that feeling of warmth. The horizontal line that breaks the circle also represents this idea of “continuation,” as it reconnects with the horizontal weaving.
I took a short break then—it felt a bit too sad. After that, I wove the alternating blue and orange section, which marked a calmer stage.
The series of orange knots that followed express a strong and determined emotion.
Finally, the piece ends with flat brown weaving, returning to a state of calm.

This time, the work was created while recalling memories from my high school days. I happened to play a song that I once listened to on a trip during that time, which brought back memories of frequently walking from my home to my grandfather’s house.
The two buildings were very close—just a five-minute walk apart. I remembered how he would always give me a lot of money whenever I left.
In the later stage of making this piece, I became more immersed in its aesthetic aspects, such as the symmetry of the patterns.
Yet the dominant feeling throughout remains one of warmth.

The theme of this piece is my grandfather’s overcoat — it was teal, so I chose blue and green as the main colors.
For some reason, I recalled a scene from my childhood: when I was in elementary school, my grandfather would wear that coat in winter and took me to school. We would wait for the bus together.
I didn’t want to use a large area of green to depict this memory, so I only added small touches of it.
I also wanted the “coat” to appear slightly “dirty” in color, symbolizing his hard work.
I suddenly remembered how he used to give me a cup of warm honey water every day, so I added a small patch of orange within the cool tones to represent the warmth I felt during those winter mornings.

This piece was inspired by my grandfather’s neighborhood, where I used to play often as a child.
The outermost ring, made of the softest thread, symbolizes the walls surrounding the neighborhood.
In the center, I used certain weaving techniques to express the idea of “shuttling,” recalling how I used to glide through the streets and among the adults on my scooter.
The color green represents the trees in the neighborhood, while the orange symbolizes the joy of my childhood.

Conditions: Listening to the music I loved around 2014 — including the song “Windowsill” — helps me return to those memories.

This piece depicts a single scene — a windowsill. It’s based on a memory from elementary school, after a wind ensemble rehearsal, when my grandfather took me to a dumpling restaurant. I remember the windowsill in the restaurant’s restroom. At that time, I loved a song called “Windowsill.” One evening, while looking out the window for no particular reason, the view suddenly blended with the feeling of that song.
The whole scene was filled with the deep blue of night and the dark green leaves outside the window. I also wove in the memory of us walking home together after dinner under the night sky.
Beyond that, the piece carries the sum of all those nights he walked me home.

This piece represents a slice of my grandfather’s master bedroom, viewed from bottom to top.
At the very bottom are the floor tiles.
The large purple section on the right recalls the color of my grandmother’s favorite bedsheet — the texture isn’t quite the same, but its softness gives me the same sense of warmth.
On the right side are green plants, with branches interlaced with sunlight.
Above that, the brown and green areas represent the tall wardrobe, always filled to the top and reaching all the way to the ceiling.

This memory takes place at night, when my grandparents and I were looking out over the lake in the park.
The gray and green tones represent the rippling surface of the water.
The park was very dark at night, so the overall palette is subdued and low in saturation.
On the surface of the water, there are faint reflections of lights from distant buildings — I always found myself wondering what the people inside those buildings might be doing.

This memory comes from a winter in my childhood.
My grandfather made me a small ice sled, and one day I was playing with it on the empty frozen lake at Zizhuyuan Park just before closing time, with him watching from the shore.
This piece mainly depicts our walk from the ice back toward the park entrance. I was sitting in his handcart, with the ice sled placed inside, as he pulled me along a deserted forest path.
Along the way, the only sound was our footsteps crunching in the snow, and everything was composed of earthy browns, the green of the trees, and the white of the snow.

This is a piece made for my mother. It describes something very abstract: her praise of me.
I realized that whenever I face setbacks or failures, I always think of the constant encouragement she has given me from childhood to the present. She would sincerely tell me that I am smart and talented. Her words always help me regain confidence and face challenges again.
The entire composition is rendered in warm tones, because her voice and expressions make me feel strong and empowered. At the same time, the warmth is layered and multifaceted, reflecting different aspects of her support—something that makes me feel held, supported, and able to rely on it.

Meta data: Reminiscing about the time I spent with my dad.
Technical details: Freestyle
This is a piece related to my father. It describes a memory of playing sports with him on a school playground.
I always remember a tree standing next to a basketball hoop—the exposed roots made the ground uneven. Nearby, there was also a running track, and every time we finished playing, he would ask me to run a few more laps.
In the composition, the gray areas represent the tree roots and the track, while the interwoven green and brown elements rising upward suggest the tree trunk and its dense foliage. The touches of orange on the right symbolize sunlight. We always played in the morning, and afterward we would go home to eat the meal my mother had cooked.
Tools
Tool 1
When a long length of thread is needed for continuous weaving, the thread can be wound around the needle and secured with a white sleeve. This allows the excess thread to be temporarily stored inside the sleeve, while the shape of the sleeve also ensures that the needle can pass smoothly through the warp threads without getting caught.
Tool 2
This is a grooming comb customized to my working habits. Its length closely matches that of most of my pieces, allowing me to groom the weaving once after completing each weft line.
